PHOENIX, AZ - Five dogs were saved from a burning house in Phoenix on Christmas night.  The fire was reported just before 7:30 p.m. at a home near 22nd and Roosevelt streets.

The Phoenix Fire Department responded and began searching the home within three minutes, Capt. Jonathan Jacobs said.

A man, a woman and children had exited the home safely before firefighters arrived, but the woman said her babies were still inside.

Firefighters went searching for infants but realized the woman was talking about her dogs.

They pulled five dogs from the blaze, and treated three with oxygen and warm blankets.

"(They were) shaken, soot-covered, unresponsive, wet, cold -- you name it," said Misty Bradshaw, a paramedic who helped revive the dogs. "All of them came through."

The Phoenix Fire Department said it uses "Fido Bags" to resuscitate animals. The reusable bags were donated to the department by the Fetch Foundation and placed on all its battalion chief wagons.
Fido Bags are packed with the essential tools to get a pet through a crisis -- pet oxygen masks (human ones don't fit pets' heads), burn sheets, bandages, protective restraints, thick protective gloves for the rescuer and rinsing saline, among other things.

"While we never want the Fido Bags to be necessary, we are thrilled they were there for these sweet pets," Marie Peck, founder of the The Fetch Foundation, said in an email Thursday morning.

A crisis team from the fire department responded to assist the family.

The American Red Cross said volunteers from its Grand Canyon Chapter would assess the family's immediate needs and provide shelter, food and clothing as needed.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
