FD: 1 cat dies, 1 rescued from Ahwatukee fire

AHWATUKEE, AZ - A cat has died after fire swept through an apartment in Ahwatukee Wednesday afternoon.

Phoenix fire Capt. Jonathan Jacobs said Phoenix and Tempe fire departments were on the scene at the complex near 51st Street and Elliot Road.

Jacobs described it as a three-story apartment complex where crews found a fire burning in one unit on the second floor.

The fire was upgraded to a first-alarm call, bringing in extra firefighters.

Crews got the fire under control and checked for extension into other units.

There were reportedly two cats in the home. One died and one named “Tally” was resuscitated using a Fido bag which is used exclusively for animals.

No other injuries were reported.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire which is now under investigation.
