TAYLOR/SNOWFLAKE, AZ (Arizona Journal) - “We’re here to serve our community, and pets are an important part of people’s lives,” noted Assistant Fire Chief Willie Nelson of the Taylor-Snowflake Fire & Medical Department.

In 2007, the Fetch Foundation saw the need to help emergency responders in pet emergencies and developed the Fido Bag program to offer educational help as well as necessary field equipment to fire departments.

The Veterans Foundation of the Scottsdale Fire Department donated Fido Bags and a training video to TSFMD. Firefighters, police officers and animal control officers met for training Feb. 18 at Station 1 in Taylor. Dr. Milton DeSpain, DVM, of the Cedar Ridge Veterinary Center was on hand to follow up on the training video.

The Fido Bags contain a leash, two ropes, gloves, a blanket, a pillow case, oxygen masks, and the training taught how to use each item for a dog or cat.

The Fido Bag “offers solutions to our pets when they are in a bad situation; it’s not just people we encounter in emergency situations, it’s pets, too,” Scottsdale Fire Chief Tom Shannon noted on the training video.
Dr. DeSpain was briefly reviewed the video and answered questions. “Use common sense and use your first aid training,” he suggested.

The veterinarian donated muzzles and masks for dogs and cats. He said that the catchpoles used by Animal Control would enable firefighters to drag an animal out of an emergency situation, and suggested the fire department stash catchpoles on the fire trucks.

Nelson noted that the Fido Bags will be on each first responder engine, and there will be one on his truck.
