CAMP VERDE, AZ (Camp Verde Bugle) - The Camp Verde Fire District now has two emergency kits for pets thanks to Bruce George, Camp Verde Council Member, and Pat George, Camp Verde Animal Control volunteer. In case of fire, Camp Verde pets can now benefit from the recent addition of Fido Bags® to the Camp Verde Fire District.

Bruce George says "I wanted every Camp Verde family with a pet to breathe easier and benefit from the Fido Bag, if it's needed. Dogs are family, too."

Terry Keller, Fire Chief, Camp Verde Fire District / Montezuma Rimrock Fire District, says "The mission of the Camp Verde Fire District is to save people. Animals take care of people. We want to help both people and their animals and ease stress."

Marie Peck, Director and Founder of the Fetch Foundation, personally drove the two kits donated by the Georges to Camp Verde. The Fetch Foundation is a national non-profit organization based in Scottsdale. One of the Fetch Foundation's goals is to equip every fire truck and emergency vehicle in our nation with a Fido Bag. Their bags are used by first responders to provide life-saving intervention to family pets caught in a fire or emergency situation in order to immediately treat smoke inhalation and injuries.

Pat George stresses that in case of fire, accident, or other emergencies, pets may run away. The Camp Verde Marshal's Office Animal Control staff encourages every dog owner to chip/tag/collar their pets. Without ID, it is difficult or impossible for staff to find the owners, especially during a stressful family emergency.

An estimated half million pets are affected by fires each year in the United States. More than 40,000 family pets die from smoke inhalation alone. Oxygen is the first thing needed after smoke inhalation. Human masks are too flat and small to fit a pet's face. Fido Bags include a cone-shaped oxygen mask formed to fit a pet's muzzle. In addition each Fido Bag includes supplies to treat burns and injuries.

Fortunately the Camp Verde Fire District had not had recent emergencies that endangered pets.  Now that they have received Fido Bags, rescuers may administer oxygen, perform first aid for injuries, administer life-saving drugs, and use supplies they already carry on their trucks.  The District has the tools to give Camp Verde pets the best chance of survival.
