Rescued animals treated for smoke inhalation will be helped and resuscitated thanks to a donation from FETCH Foundation.

STRASBURG Animals have a new best friend: members of their local fire department.

Rescued animals treated for smoke inhalation will be helped and resuscitated thanks to a donation from the FETCH Foundation of Scottsdale, Ariz.

Strasburg’s Fire Department received a large and small FIDO bag that will fit over an animal’s mouth and will administer oxygen and help them breath.

Fire Capt. Andy Slemmer saw a story in The Times-Reporter about the Uhrichsville Fire Department receiving the same equipment and decided to apply for the free items.

“We had an incident where we needed oxygen for a cat and when I saw this, it was a good idea for us to have the equipment,” Slemmer said.

“Every firefighter will be trained to use this equipment for animals.”

Slemmer said the bags cost $125 each. The kit contains an oxygen mask, gloves, a leash and gel to put around the oxygen mask.

Steven Joki, a Strasburg firefighter, demonstrated the equipment on his German shepherd, Ruger.

Ruger was cooperative, however, he wanted to go and play with the firemen’s children who were at the fire station.

Slemmer said the Fire Department is thankful for the equipment. He said the equipment included a card from Therese Zadra, a lifetime supporter of FIDO from the area.

According to the FIDO Bag program’s website, an estimated half a million pets are affected by fires each year in the United States. More than 40,000 family pets die from smoke inhalation alone. A first responders’ priorities are people, pets and property in that order.

The FIDO Bags and training give the firefighters the tools to give the pets the best chance of survival in an emergency.
